Sprit of the clean energy transition at E-World 2024
E-World has always been the main event of the year for the energy software business. For over two decades, I have been participating in this event, representing leading software vendors in the energy sector. However, this year’s E-World was notably different for me, for several reasons. Firstly, I attended in my new capacity as a vendor market analyst, which gave me the opportunity to engage with numerous companies offering software solutions. Secondly, my focus was on seeking out innovative companies driving the transition to clean energy. I had the chance to meet with many companies I did not know before and delve into discussions about their business models and aspirations.
I would like also to mention that this year’s E-World marked a significant shift. It surpassed the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and emerged with unprecedented levels of interaction. Gary Vasey from ComTech Advisory captured the essence of this year’s event in a video, featuring interviews that showcased the excitement of the participants. In summary, my impressions of E-World 2024 are overwhelmingly positive. Traditional software vendors, along with newcomers and start-ups in trading and risk, are highly focused on renewable energy, power purchase agreements (PPAs), and short-term trading across various timeframes, from day-ahead to intraday and algorithmic trading. Discussions with ETRM vendors were focused on the management and valuation of new assets, real-time functionality, and energy analytics.
Moreover, I was delighted to encounter companies fully dedicated to facilitating the transition to clean energy. These companies are actively involved in supporting demand response flexibilities, virtual power plant (VPP) operations, battery optimization, and meter data management. The concept of aggregating flexibility from multiple prosumers and asset owners to create VPPs, which can then be traded on ancillary service and balancing markets, is gaining significant traction.
During the event, I had the pleasure of meeting companies like emsys VPP, Frauenhofer ITWM, Naviasoft, CyberGrid, and be.storaged, among others. They offer cutting-edge software solutions for aggregating distributed resources, creating VPPs, and optimizing batteries and other flexibilities. Some companies are even taking it a step further by directly trading flexibilities on the market, as, for example, suena. Other are involved are developing modern energy data management platforms, such as Kraken or Energy Services.
It was really a pleasure to talk to people and get that exciting spirit of innovation you see at the E-world 2024.
